Associate Prof. Hayriye Cagnan

Associate Unit Member

Hayriye Cagnan studied Electrical and Electronics engineering at Cornell University, USA, as a Fulbright Scholar and specialised in signal processing and biomedical engineering (2000-2004). In 2004, she was awarded a British Chevening scholarship and was accepted to the M.Sc. programme in Engineering and Physical Science in Medicine at Imperial College London. Hayriye completed her Ph.D. in Neuroscience in a joint placement between the University of Amsterdam and Philips Research Laboratories in 2010. Subsequently, Hayriye joined the University of Oxford as a postdoctoral researcher and worked on tremor pathophysiology. In 2015, Hayriye was awarded an MRC Skills Development Fellowship in Biomedical Informatics, and was based at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at University College London. In 2018, Hayriye was awarded an MRC Career Development Award and established her independent research group at the MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit. In 2023, Hayriye took up a Senior Lectureship (Associate Professor) at Imperial College London. She continues to collaborate closely with the MRC BNDU.

Key Research Areas

Hayriye's research provides theory-driven strategies for stimulation that can selectively modulate brain rhythms.

  1. Theoretical models of disease and stimulation
  2. Dynamic Neuromodulation
  3. Remote therapy optimisation
  4. Wearable devices and remote monitoring
Research Techniques
  1. Theoretical models (e.g. Hodgkin and Huxley, neural mass models, etc.)
  2. Biomedical imaging (e.g. EEG, Optically Pumped Magnetometers, etc.)
  3. Invasive and non-invasive brain stimulation
  4. Peripheral nerve stimulation
  5. Signal processing
