Research Assistant (Magill Group)

Closing Date

The MRC BNDU is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to work as part of an exciting research collaboration at the interface between academia and industry that has been established to advance the development of treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

This Research Assistant will provide specialist technical support and conduct original research as part of collaborative scientific projects that are designed to elucidate the function/dysfunction of vulnerable neurons in mouse models of neurodegenerative disorders, including experimental Parkinson’s disease.  The post holder will be required to contribute to scientific research by assisting with experiments that entail the use of neuroanatomical and other approaches to investigate the mouse brain, as well as by assisting in the daily organisation and running of the laboratory spaces used by the host Group.

In addition to having a B.Sc. or equivalent qualification, candidates should have a track record in laboratory technician work and/or research experience in the field of neuroscience. Candidates are also expected to be team players, able to work as part of a group and independently, and to have excellent communication and organisational skills.

The post holder will be part of the Magill Group, and will be based at the MRC BNDU, located within the Pharmacology building in Mansfield Road. The Group has a strong track record in studying the functional organization of the basal ganglia and partner neuronal networks in rodents, including in models of Parkinson’s disease. The proposed research will take full advantage of the intellectual environment, capital equipment, technical expertise and excellent infrastructure in place at the MRC BNDU. There will be ample opportunities for the post holder to receive further training in-house and externally (incl. courses, workshops, conferences) and to develop skills on the job, as well as to work in partnership with other scientists in the Oxford/Bristol Myers Squibb collaboration and the MRC BNDU.

This is a fixed-term post of 12 months in the first instance, with an initial probationary period, and is available from 8th September 2022. This post is a University Grade 6 (06S) position with a starting salary of between £29,614 and £35,326 per annum.

The post holder will be contractually required to undertake business critical work at the MRC BNDU, including within its Biomedical Services Facility, outside of core working days for the equivalent of 2 days per month. The post holder will be given reasonable notice of this requirement. An additional premium payment of 6% of annual salary will be made as a monthly superannuable allowance for undertaking this on-demand work. Owing to the nature of this position, any offer of employment with the University will be subject to a satisfactory security screening.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to Professor Magill.

Applications must be made via the University of Oxford’s online recruitment system, using Vacancy ID 158726

The closing date for applications for this post is 12 midday UK time on Monday 1st August 2022.

Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter, likely during the week beginning 8th August.
