Postdoctoral Neuroengineer (Denison Group)

Closing Date

The MRC BNDU is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Neuroengineer to work as part of the Denison Group. The Group has a strong track record in first-in-human tools for clinical neuroscience and therapy prototyping. The Group uses transdisciplinary approaches to elucidate the substrates underlying activity dynamics in brain circuits, employing innovative techniques to monitor and manipulate neural circuits and to determine their influence on disease symptoms.

This job role involves research in the field of neuroengineering and neurotechnology. The appointee will design, execute, analyse and report on state-of-the-art technology-based experiments focused on systems for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disease, with a focus on chronic pain. This may include a range of technologies, spanning non-invasive technologies (such as virtual reality and neurostimulation) to invasive systems (deep brain stimulation). The appointee’s experiments will be guided by a mechanistic understanding of cognitive and brain abnormalities, with the aim to design targeted therapeutics that potentially integrate multiple systems. The proposed research will take full advantage of the intellectual environment, capital equipment, technical expertise and excellent infrastructure in place at the MRC BNDU.

In addition to having a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, candidates should have a promising track record of original research in human neurophysiology, experimental medicine, and closed-loop stimulation of neuronal circuits. They will carry out their own research projects and may supervise more junior group members.

Candidates are also expected to have technical expertise in one or more of the following: (1) electrophysiological recording from ambulatory humans; (2) the design of virtual reality paradigms; (3) development and implementation of closed-loop algorithms/circuits for neuroscientific experiments; (4) Advanced analysis of multi-sensor electrophysiological data. In addition, candidates should provide evidence of creative and critical thinking as applied to the development and execution of a cohesive programme of research.

This is a fixed-term post until 30th November 2025, with an initial probationary period, and is available from 1st April 2023. This post is a University Grade 7 (07S) position with a starting salary of between £34,308 and £42,155 per annum. A less experienced candidate may be appointed at Grade 6 (£30,502 to £36,386 per annum), with a commensurate adjustment in either the essential criteria, responsibilities or duties.

Informal enquiries can be addressed to Professor Tim Denison.

Applications must be made via the University of Oxford’s online recruitment system, using Vacancy ID 163723

The closing date for applications for this post is 12 midday UK time on 27th March 2023.

Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
