Dr. Thomas Simpson

Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Thomas G. Simpson graduated with a B.Eng. in Computer Engineering from the University of Kent in 2016. He then moved to the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland, to study for an M.Sc. in Electronic Engineering, before completing a Ph.D. there. Thomas’s doctoral research was based on machine learning and EEG, focusing on applying these techniques to human-computer interaction systems. More specifically, Thomas investigated EEG features as correlates of learning and performance, time-series neural networks for vehicle trajectory prediction, and novel approaches for explaining the behaviour of deep learning models.

Thomas joined the Tan Group in February 2022 as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Neuroscience. Thomas is committed to developing machine learning and computational modelling approaches to better understand and treat motor degenerative diseases, particularly to detect symptoms, model pathology, and improve closed-loop adaptive neuromodulation.
