Applications are invited to join a multidisciplinary team at the MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unit at the University of Oxford. We seek a Research Technician to provide specialist technical support to the scientific Programmes and projects of the MRC Unit that use animals as part of their research on the brain. The post holder will be required to play a central role in the daily organisation and smooth running of the Biomedical Services facility (BMSU) of the MRC Unit. A full-time post holder will also be expected to provide laboratory technical support to MRC Unit Programmes.
Candidates should have a minimum IAT Level 2 Diploma in Laboratory Animal Science & Technology, have a good track record in animal technician work with small rodents, and be fully conversant with all aspects of UK Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986. Candidates are expected to be team players, able to work as part of a group and independently, and to have excellent communication skills. A well-developed ability to keep records, manage time and multitask is also essential.
The post holder will be part of the MRC Unit’s BMSU Core Support team, and will be based on the Unit’s main site at the Department of Pharmacology. The BMSU Core Support team works closely and collaboratively with all of the MRC Unit Programmes and projects that use animals as part of their original research into the function and dysfunction of brain circuits. Researchers at the MRC Unit employ innovative electrophysiological, anatomical, behavioural and genetics-based techniques to address their respective scientific aims.
This is a fixed-term post with an end date of 31st March 2020 in the first instance (possible extension from 1st April 2020 subject to renewal of funding from the Medical Research Council), to start from 19th April 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is full-time (36.5 hours per week), although from 22 hours per week over 5 days will be considered. Please state preferred working pattern in the application. The post holder will be contractually required to undertake business critical work outside of core working days for the equivalent of up to 2 days per month, for which overtime will be paid at the appropriate rate.
This post is a University Grade 4 (04S) position with a starting salary of between £21,585 and £24,983 per annum, with a discretionary range up to £26,495 per annum (pro rata for part-time). Owing to the nature of this position, any offer of employment with the University will be subject to a satisfactory security screening.
